Eddie Vedder is an amazing lyricist. When put to music, his lyrics raise goosebumps.

“I just want to scream, ‘Hello’
My God, it’s been so long
Never dreamed you return
But now here you are
And here I am
Hearts and thoughts they fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade away…”

I remember hearing an advert for Damien Rice’s CD “O” on TV and instantly fell for it. I think snippets of 2 songs were played – “Delicate” and “The Blower’s Daughter”
The Blower’s Daughter holds special meaning…

“And so it is
Just like you said it would be
Life goes easy on me
Most of the time
And so it is
The shorter story
No love, no glory
No hero in her sky

I can’t take my eyes off of you
I can’t take my eyes off you
I can’t take my eyes off of you
I can’t take my eyes off you
I can’t take my eyes off you”

I’ve been listening to the most recent Counting Crows “Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings” CD a lot lately. It’s certainly a bit of a grower, as on first listen nothing really grabbed me. Adam Duritz has always been able to write good lyrics. This one from “Sundays”.

“Give me a kiss
I think it feels like love
Give me a kiss
I think it feels like sunshine
C’mon baby, light me up
I wanna look into your eyes until I go blind and…

You think that you can do without me
I can’t do anything at all
You think that you can do without me
But I don’t believe in Sundays
And I don’t believe in anything at all”

I particularly like the lines about remembering… I’m guilty of that.

“Try to remember what you might forget
I try to remember everything
Try to remember so you don’t disappear
Try to remember so you don’t fade away”

Once again, Nick Cave has lyrics that reach deep inside you, and take hold. Listening to his songs always leaves me feeling very introspective.
This one here “(Are You) The One That I’ve Been Waiting For” is taken from the excellent The Boatman’s Call CD.

“I’ve felt you coming girl, as you drew near
I knew you’d find me, cause I longed you here
Are you my desitiny? Is this how you’ll appear?
Wrapped in a coat with tears in your eyes?
Well take that coat babe, and throw it on the floor
Are you the one that I’ve been waiting for?

As you’ve been moving surely toward me
My soul has comforted and assured me
That in time my heart it will reward me
And that all will be revealed
So I’ve sat and I’ve watched an ice-age thaw
Are you the one that I’ve been waiting for?”

I can’t recall how I first came across Damien Jurado. Quite possibly a track I heard on a TV program piqued my interest as I like acoustic singer-songwriters His most recent CD release, “Caught In The Trees” includes a sublime track called “Everything Trying”. Simple, short and very much to the point…

“I’d call you now to tell you I’m thinking of you
But it does me no good when the phone is just blocking my view
And I would sail back to you
And I would sail back to you

And I would come back and admit that it wasn’t your fault
But I’m tired and unwilling to be the only one who was wrong
And I would sail back to you
And I would sail back to you
And I would sail back to you

I’ll be sailing on your deep blue eyes
I’ll be sailing on your deep blue eyes
I’ll be sailing on your deep blue eyes…”

As was mentioned in the previous blog entry, Jeff Buckley can really make a cover song his own, weaving his own style into it. He improvises so much with Van Morrison’s “Sweet Thing” (again on the “Live At Sin-é” CD), making it almost personal. I could listen to it all day.

“And you will hold me strongly in your arms again
Pretty babe, I will not remember that I ever felt the pain”

He adds a whole new verse around halfway through. When I first heard it, I played it over and over again…

“Remember the day when I held your hand
The look in my eyes only you can understand
Remember when we held each other soft and low
How nothing could ever be that strong
Sleep tonight with dreams as sweet as angels wings
All your dreams will bring you sweeter things
Sweet sweet sweet thing, oh sweet thing
Don’t, don’t, don’t you cry, oh no no no
Come here and let me tell you, let me tell you how much I love you
Sweet thing, oh sweet thing
Oh sweet thing, oh sweet thing”

Jeff Buckley’s cover versions of songs never cease to amaze me with their power and feeling – his voice adds his own unique touch to them. The “Live At Sin-é” CD is probably Jeff at his “rawest” and best; before Grace was released he did a live show, and luckily for us it it was recorded…

“If you knew how I missed you
You would not stay away today
Don’t you know I need you
Stay here my dear with me

I need you here my darling
Together for a day a day
Together never parting
Just you just me my love

I can’t go on without you
Your love is all I’m living for
I love all things about you
Your heart your soul my love

I need you here beside me
Forever and a day a day
I know whatever betides me
I love you I love you I do”

With a song title of “I Love You” (this one by Sarah McLachlan), you can almost guarantee there’ll be something about loss in there. I’ve been a bit of a fan of McLachlan since seeing her perform live on the Jools Holland TV programme around 12 or 13 years ago. Her performance was amazing, and I’ve still got an audio copy I took from the VHS tape.
In this song, I do like the line: “Let me be the calm you seek”. I can identify with that.

“I have a smile
Stretched from ear to ear
To see you walking down the road

We meet at the lights
I stare for a while
The world around disappears

Just you and me
On this island of hope
A breath between us could be miles

Let me surround you
My sea to your shore
Let me be the calm you seek

Oh and every time I’m close to you
There’s too much I can’t say
And you just walk away

And I forgot
To tell you
I love you
And the night’s
Too long
And cold here
Without you
I grieve in my condition
For I cannot find the strength to say I need you so

Oh and every time I’m close to you
There’s too much I can’t say
And you just walk away

And I forgot
To tell you
I love you
And the night’s
Too long
And cold here
Without you”

As mentioned, female vocalists are my current listening pleasure. It doesn’t matter who the protagonist is, these lines from a Missy Higgins song seemed to make sense to me…

“And I won’t be far from where you are if ever you should call
You meant more to me than anyone I ever loved at all
But you taught me how to trust myself and so I say to you
This is what I have to do

‘Cos I dont know who I am, who I am without you
All I know is that I should
And I don’t know if I could stand another hand upon you
All I know is that I should”

I’ve been listening to female vocalists the past couple of days, and this from Jewel is very apt…

“My hands are two travelers they’ve crossed oceans and lands
Yet they are too small on the continent of your skin
Wandering, wandering
I could spend my life traveling the length of your body each night”
